Welcome to Skokloster castle!

Exhibition 2009: "Living in a historical sight" open from April to November 1th

Living in a historical sight

The family of Hermine and Rutger von Essen moved into their modernised flat in Skokloster’s castle in 1948. In this exhibition we portray the period of 1947-1967, in which the family von Essen and their employees lived here. Living in a large and remarkable baroque castle had both advantages and disadvantages. There was ample space in the castle - but the private sphere was still limited. The castle was already a big tourist attraction – at the same time it was a home. Managing this cultural, historical legacy demanded enormous economic resources.  The family ended up being the last private owners in the castle's history. In 1967 the state purchased the castle and since then it has been a museum.
